Logan Heley, Executive Director

logan@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Logan Heley became Heartland Conservation Alliance’s second Executive Director in February 2022.

Logan’s interest in conservation and climate action began as a half-day kindergartener spending his mornings at his father’s modest solar business. But it was more recent involvement with Climate Action KC and as a volunteer on HCA’s 2021 Blue River Report Card that opened Logan’s eyes to the importance of nature-based solutions.

Jess Hartel, Senior Director of Conservation & Education

jess@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Jess grew up on a small family farm in the Kansas City Northland, which is where her love of nature and animals began. From an early age, Jess was fascinated with chimpanzees and their similarities to humans. In later years, she studied their behavior in both captive and wild settings while actively working to conserve them, their habitat, and other species. Jess is interested in applying her wildlife conservation toolkit to urban settings to help preserve and protect biodiverse habitats that provide environmental, social, cultural, and economic benefits to surrounding human populations.

Rebecca Thacker, Director of Development & Partnerships

rebecca@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Rebecca Thacker grew up in a rural town in northwest Missouri, exploring the creek and woods behind her home. Her love for the outdoors deepened when she moved to Arizona, where she was amazed by the abundance of outdoor recreational activities. While pursuing degrees in History and Arts Management at Northern Arizona University, she would camp and hike as often as she could.

Damon Lee Patterson, Conservation Project Manager

damon@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Damon Lee Patterson joined Heartland Conservation Alliance in 2025 as Conservation Project Manager.

Damon’s love for the Blue River Watershed was a seed planted early—growing up in Kansas City, he was always near a creek or patch of woods and spent countless hours exploring the city’s natural environments. “You can travel the whole city through creeks, trails, parks, and woods—and I did,” he says.

Hannah Vender Meulen, Outdoor Education Coordinator & Blue River Nature Guide

hannah@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Hannah relocated to Lawrence, Kansas to pursue her bachelor’s degree at the University of Kansas. Her passion for the environment originated in high school, where she explored conservation and sustainable agriculture in coursework. Running also became an outlet for her love of nature, as she spent time exploring trails throughout Chicago, a habit she continues in  Kansas.

Christian Holderby, Conservation Land Steward

christian@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Christian grew up immersed in nature. Whether he was fishing at his secret spot or constructing massive forts from fallen branches behind his childhood home in Smithville, Missouri, he was always in touch with the outdoors. He cherished the feeling of soft grass underfoot by his fishing ponds, despite the inevitable mosquito bites.

Mahreen Ansari, Communications & Engagement Coordinator

mahreen@heartlandconservationalliance.org

Mahreen, a South Kansas City native, attended the Hickman Mills C-1 School District and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her love of nature sprouted from her family’s dedication to keeping her in touch with the plants and animals around her. Tending to tomatoes with her grandmother, helping her father with their fruit trees, and raising chickens is what first taught her about the importance of stewardship. It taught her both the importance of human connection to nature and how it benefits us but also human responsibility to nature.
